A Covenant With God by Ann Elaine Broughton




“When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said” (Numbers 30:2 NIV).

In the Old Testament there were many times that God made a covenant (promise) to people. God never broke this covenant. For example: God made a covenant to never again flood the earth and kill everything. He promised Abraham that from him would come a great nation, and the nation of Israel still exists today because of that promise.
Now I would like to have you think about a covenant that you can make with God. As we start a new year it is common for people to make resolutions, usually it is about losing weight, exercising, spending more time with family etc. But I would like to challenge you to make a promise to God to do something for Him this year. This should not be taken lightly. As the above verse says, a vow to the Lord is serious business and must not be broken so when you make your promise to God you really must keep it. Pray to God and ask Him what you can do for Him during this year and then write down what thoughts come into your mind concerning ways that you can serve Him. Make a covenant to Him, write it down and keep it where you can see it every day. The Lord has a purpose for you and this year you can grow in amazing ways if you surrender your will to Him. May God bless you as you search for a way to grow closer to Him by serving Him in whatever way you are led.
Dear Lord,
Help us as we search for a way we can serve you and make a promise to you to do it. Let us not take lightly this promise. Lead us to do what you want us to do, and give us the strength and courage even when we feel it is impossible. We know that nothing is impossible with God.

Proclaim the Good News by Ann Elaine Broughton



“But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10 NIV).

The shepherds were watching their sheep at night when suddenly an angel appeared and told them about the birth of Jesus. Can you imagine how they felt? Have you ever wondered why God would tell shepherds first about His Son’s birth? Interesting isn’t it? But if you recall David was a shepherd and a man after God’s own heart. Shepherds had a lot of time to think and pray to God. After the one angel told them the news, then a heavenly host appeared with angels praising God. Now, I don’t know about you, but I would have fallen on my face in wonder and fear. But these shepherds immediately went to Bethlehem to find the Christ child. They found Mary and Joseph, and the baby Jesus lying in a manger. Then they did something which actually made them Christ’s first disciples, they told everyone what had been told them about Jesus and everyone was amazed.
The shepherds did exactly what we should be doing. Those of us who are Christians are to proclaim that Jesus Christ was born and died for our sins so that we might have eternal life. Jesus commanded this by saying, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19 NIV). We can not act like this is a big secret. There are people all around us who are lost and need the Good Shepherd to lead them back to the path towards Heaven. It is up to us to tell them of this Savior who loves them so much and wants them to come out of the darkness into His wonderful light.
So this Christmas ask someone to come to church with you on Christmas Eve. Lead them to the manger and watch what God can do.
A miracle indeed is waiting for those who give their lives to Christ. The gift of salvation is the most precious gift of all.
Dear Lord,
As Christmas approaches quickly help us to remember to proclaim to others why Jesus was born. Help us to lead someone to the One who can forgive them of their sins and give them the peace that only Christ can give.

Be A Gift For Someone Else by Ann Elaine Broughton



“For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV).

Christmas is fast approaching and with all the busyness of the season, it is very easy to forget what we are celebrating. The most important gift was given to us over 2000 years ago. It is Jesus’ birth that Christians all over the world celebrate on Christmas Day. That birth brought God to us in human form. His birth was prophesied by Isaiah and Micah. Micah 5:2 prophesied that Bethlehem would be where a ruler would come who would be the shepherd of God’s people, Israel. Jesus’ birth fulfilled this prophecy. Jesus came to show us who His Father is.
He walked this earth as a human, with all the feelings and temptations that we have. It is because of His birth that we have hope of eternal life. He was the ultimate sacrifice. So not only should we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we also should praise God that He loved us so much to send His son to earth to give us the hope of eternal life.
As you look forward to Christmas and all the fun of the season, don’t forget to think about the one gift given at Christmas by God to us many years ago. His love is still so real today and can be seen through the acts of Christians who give to others in sacrificial form.
Do something for someone this season. Go out of your way to help those who are in need. Call a shut-in and visit with them. Give a financial gift to someone who really needs assistance. Send flowers to someone who needs encouragement. Help people unload their groceries. Do something wonderful for someone. This season isn’t about getting gifts. It is about you being a gift to someone else. I promise you will be blessed if you do.
Dear Lord,
Help me to be your gift to someone during this Christmas season. Help me to reach out to those who need a helping hand. Help me to carry someone else’s burdens. Help me to give humbly.

Our Hope Is In God by Ann Elaine Broughton




“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope” (Romans 15:4 NIV).

Hope is what all of us need. It is that magical word that encircles your heart and gives you a reason to live. If you have hope nothing can stop you. As Christians our hope is in the Lord. “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19 NIV).
Our boat has an anchor that we use to keep the boat secure in one spot. That small piece of metal can keep our pontoon secure even in the strong winds. Jesus is our anchor of hope. He keeps us secure when the waves of worry and doubt are tossing our lives all around.
The Bible also is an anchor for our souls to give us hope. You see when we read all about the men and the women in the Bible and how they lived and sometimes failed we see that our God is full of mercy and grace. It gives us hope to see that even though the great leaders in the Bible failed miserably, God accepted their plea of repentance and forgave them. David was a murderer, but because he had a contrite heart, God forgave him and actually said he was a man after His own heart. So you see it is so very important to read the Bible and see the hope that lies there. God used ordinary people to do extraordinary things through His power. That same God is working today in us.
Dear Lord,
Our hope comes from you and all you have spoken to us through your Word. Help us to remember that it is so important to study the Bible knowing that how you helped those people isn’t any different than how you can work in us today. Help us to continue to have hope that we can do mighty works through your power.

Praise The Lord, O My Soul by Ann Elaine Broughton




“Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle” (Psalm 103:2-5 NIV).


With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I thought it would be appropriate to think about our blessings, not just our material blessings but our spiritual blessings. I believe we take our faith for granted. In this country we are so blessed to be able to worship God in any way we choose. In many countries Christians are persecuted and even murdered. We have Bibles, sometimes more than one in our households. In some countries, people are begging to have Bibles sent to them.
I will never forget reading God’s Smuggler by Brother Andrew. I was totally amazed how the Lord helped them smuggle Bibles to communist countries. God performed miracles in order for Bibles to be delivered. Do you think those Bibles were precious to those who received them? You bet. Those people knew that Brother Andrew risked his life to get those Bibles across hostile borders.
This Thanksgiving, before you eat, open your Bible and read Psalm 100 to your whole family. This holiday is all about worshiping and praising God for His blessings. Let’s remember God this Thanksgiving and give Him praise for all He has done for us. He crowns us with love and compassion, and satisfies our desires with good things. We have much to praise God about.
Dear Lord,
This Thanksgiving let us praise you for all you have done for us. Thank you for forgiving us our sins, for your mercy, for restoring our spirits when we are down, and for your love and compassion.

Do Not Fear, God Is With You by Ann Elaine Broughton




“For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you” (Isaiah 41:13 NIV)


Have you ever been afraid of something? Fear can paralyze you.
It can make you feel downcast and alone. What are you afraid of?
There was one time when I was very afraid. In 2000 my husband was in the hospital with a complication caused by a gallstone. The surgeon had to go into his duct and get a gallstone and since his duct was so much smaller than most people’s it closed up due to the irritation. I was terrified that I would lose my husband because he turned orange and lost 20 pounds during his 17 day stay. He didn’t eat during that whole time and he was so very sick. I wasn’t feeling well either and had gotten a very bad cold so I hadn’t slept much and was overcome with despair from him being so ill. Fatigue and worry can suck the life out of you. I remember crying to God to help him recover. God did answer my prayers and my husband gradually came back to his old self. But it took a whole month. Fear almost got the best of me, but I placed Rick in God’s hands and trusted Him to take care of him.
Don’t let fear get the best of you. Whatever you are afraid of lay it at God’s feet and believe that He can handle anything. God loves you and wants you to know that He is with you during your storms in life. Remember this verse: “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid” (Hebrews 13:6 NIV). When the apostles were in the boat in a very bad storm, Jesus walked to them on the water saying, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (Matthew 8:27 NIV). Imagine Him walking to you in the middle of your huge storm holding out His hand and saying, “Don’t be afraid. I am with you. I will never leave you or forsake you.”
Dear Lord,
Help me during the storms of life to believe that you are with me. Help me not to fear, but to remain faithful knowing that your love for me will never end.

Take Up the Shield of Faith by Ann Elaine Broughton

“Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield” (Psalm 5:12 NIV).


Has anyone ever done you a favor? It’s a wonderful feeling when someone does something for you. The Lord favors you as with a shield. I think that is a great picture to put into your mind; the Lord’s love covering you and shielding you from the Enemy.
I did some research on shields and found something interesting. “The heavily armored Roman legionaries carried large shields (scuta) that could provide far more protection, but made swift movement a little more difficult. Famously, the Romans used their shields to create a tortoise-like formation called a testudo in which entire groups of soldiers would be enclosed in an armoured box to provide protection against missiles. Many ancient shield designs featured incuts of one sort of another. This was done to accommodate the shaft of a spear, thus facilitating tactics requiring the soldiers to stand close together forming a wall of shields.” * The huge shields protected the soldiers. When they all grouped together and held their shields up they were very protected.
That is how we as Christians need to hold the shield of faith of the Lord. “Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16 NIV). Just as the soldiers grouped together with their shields, so we as Christians need to be a constant encouragement to our fellow Christians. Satan is constantly looking for our weaknesses to cause us to fail and become discouraged. We need to pray for and with our Christian friends.
Hold up your shield of faith and remember that God surrounds you with his favor as a shield. This week envision His shield of favor surrounding you and hold forth your shield of faith knowing that God is greater than the Enemy. Also make it a point to encourage a Christian friend.
Dear Lord,
Thank you for covering me with your favor as a shield. Help me to hold my shield of faith up so that I won’t be touched by evil. Help me also to be of encouragement to my Christian friends.

God Is My Fortress by Ann Elaine Broughton




“My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken” (Psalm 62:1-2 NIV).

Can you say this? When the enemy is at your door and threatening to break it down can you say that you will never be shaken because God is your fortress? The enemy can come in different forms: depression, self-hatred, weaknesses, sin, and sickness, to name a few. Do you love God enough to believe that He will never leave you or forsake you?
When we were visiting in Hungary while my son and daughter-in-law were on a mission trip, we saw a fortress. It was on the highest hill overlooking Buda and Pest. I remember that because it was January, very cold, and we had to walk up that hill to see it. It was daunting. The fortress was called the Citadel. It had 60 cannons around the outside walls. It was formidable. You would consider it a safe place to be in case of a war.
You see you and I are at war with something that can’t be seen. But it is just as scary, because it can cripple you if you let it get hold of your heart. It is only in trusting in the Lord and letting Him be your fortress that will keep you safe from evil. Who is your rock when the enemy comes looking for you? Do you have tendency to count too much on friends for help? What if your friends aren’t around? Then who will help you? I think sometimes we have a tendency to put people up on a pedestal who we consider to be great Christians. We believe they have all the answers, but you see God wants us to trust in Him. It is good to consult other Christians, but the ultimate answer must come from what you feel the Holy Spirit is telling you to do. He alone is the one you can depend on to be your rock and salvation. Trust only in Him and His word so that you will never be shaken.
Dear Lord,
Help me to be safe in your fortress and never be shaken when life rears its ugly head to bring me to my knees. I know I can run to you and be safe for you are my God.

God is Our Deliverer by Ann Elaine Broughton

“Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me” (Psalm 69:1-2 NIV).

Have you ever felt like you were drowning in troubles? Are you sinking into the miry depths? I believe that many of us have been there in this life. Sometimes it seems that the worries of this world are too much for us, and we feel overwhelmed by stress. We are caught in an undertow of misery.
I would like to give you a visual of this. Today I went for a hike along the Maumee by the dam. I stood by the dam and watched the water. On one side of the dam the water seemed peaceful and calm. I noticed a log floating gently towards the dam. When it went down to the bottom of the dam I saw something very different. The log was captured by boiling and rolling waters. It was muddy and churning. The log got caught in an undertow. It would go a few feet away from the falls and get sucked under only to be slammed into the dam again. This kept happening over and over.
Do you feel like this log? Are you or someone you know caught in an undertow of worry, sickness, addiction, or depression? It can feel like this. Like you are being sucked under and trying so very hard to swim away from that undertow. I have experienced tremendous depression with fibromyalgia. I know what it is like to feel like you are drowning in sorrow and pain. But when I have hit the bottom, I prayed and found the peace that flooded my soul. Just as Peter, when he was trying to walk on the water in the storm, was lifted out by God’s hand, so you can be lifted up to the light by God’s love. I know because I have felt that love totally surround me and bring me hope. Hope. Isn’t that a wonderful word? One of my favorite verses that I recite when I am struggling is: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:31 NIV).

Trust in the Lord and pray to Him when you are feeling as if you are in an undertow of worries. He will be there for you.
Dear Lord,
I know that you will never leave me or forsake me. When I feel overwhelmed by life’s problems, help me to call on you. I know that you will give me perfect peace.

The Lord is With the Brokenhearted by Ann Elaine Broughton



“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18 NIV).

Have you ever been brokenhearted? I believe all of us have experienced a time in our lives when our hearts did indeed feel broken. It could have been when someone you loved died or when someone you cared about dearly just dropped out of your life. I have experienced it and you actually feel as if your heart is breaking.
When my boys were little we took in a foster daughter whom we loved as our own daughter and we wanted to adopt her. She rejected us and didn’t want any of our love whatsoever. I actually felt like my heart was broken because I loved her and wanted to help her. When she rejected my love it was heart wrenching. I stumbled through that year with her in complete remorse. She left us after the school year to live with another foster family. Being heart broken is so very hard, but my faith in God carried me through it. I prayed constantly and tried to help her see that God loved her also. She had such a tough life and needed to know that there was a Savior who loved her no matter what her past was like. At least she went to church with us every Sunday.
I am hoping that something we did for her made a lasting affect on her life. I had to give that to the Lord. Worrying about it didn’t help and she was in His hands ultimately. All we can do is the best we can.
Maybe you are feeling heartbroken at the moment. The Lord is there for you. “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles” (Psalm 34:17 NIV). Jesus loves you and knows your burdens. He is compassionate. When his friend, Lazarus died, he went to Martha and Mary and seeing them crying was moved to cry with them. He will bring you peace and joy eventually. “Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5 NIV). Trust God and He will change your sadness to joy once again.
Dear Lord,
In our lives there are times when our hearts are broken. Help us during that season of our lives. Give us the peace that only you can give.

Be Patient by Ann Elaine Broughton




“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not boast, it is not proud” (1 Corinthians 13:4 NIV).

How patient are you? If you are like most people, patience is one of the fruits of the spirit that is a challenge. Sometimes it is very easy to love someone and be patient with them. But there are some people who can really try your patience. These people may be prickly people. You know who I mean. Those people who find the worst in every situation and are very negative. Maybe there are people around you who are always putting others down. These are prickly people. Have you every hugged a porcupine? It is kind of difficult isn’t it? But Jesus said that we are to love everyone. “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 19:19 NIV). Patience to love even the prickly people in your life takes a lot of prayer. It is my experience that people who are hard to get along with have some issues in their lives that need fixed. They need a lot of love. So it is up to us to show them Christian love.
Jesus is the ultimate example of showing love and patience. People jostled him constantly needing to be healed and begging for a miracle. He never yelled at them, but showed them love and understanding. He even took under his wing his own betrayer, Judas. He never berated Judas as far as we know, and during the Last Supper he called him friend. “Friend, do what you came for” (Matthew 26:50 NIV). He knew that Judas was going to betray Him and He called him friend. That is love. Could you do that?
Who in your life needs love that is patient? Jesus is patient with us you know so we should be patient to others. “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9 NIV). If God can be patient with us, we can show love and patience to everyone.
Dear Lord,
Help me to be patient when prickly people enter my life. Help me to show your love to them, to keep my temper in check, and make sure that the words I speak are words that you would speak to others.

You Need To Be As Humble As A Child by Ann Elaine Broughton




“Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14 NIV).

Jesus loved children and made many references about how we are to have the faith of a child in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. He said, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3-4 NIV). Have you noticed how much faith a little one has? They believe without a doubt about Jesus and heaven with complete innocence. That is how we are to accept what we know about the Lord.
I recently read a book called “Heaven Is For Real” by Todd Burpo. It is a true story about a 3 year old boy who had a heaven experience when he was being operated on for a burst appendix. He saw some amazing things in regards to heaven and his father, being a preacher, made a biblical reference for each thing his son told him. When he got better he would over time tell his dad about heaven. One thing that stood out for me was that he kept telling his dad that Jesus really loved children. Over and over again he would tell his dad that. Then when someone died he went with his folks to the funeral home and kept asking his dad if the person knew Jesus. He practically yelled to his dad saying, “But dad, he can’t get into heaven if he doesn’t know Jesus.” He was adamant about it. He was sincere and worried.
I believe that is what we should be doing. We should have the same passion for the Lord as this child. To have a childlike faith is to believe without a shadow of a doubt that He exists and that He has prepared a place for us in heaven. Do you truly believe this? Then it is time to put your faith into action.
Dear Lord,
Humble me completely. Let my faith be as a child. Help me to believe in the unbelievable and know that all things are possible with you.

God in Our Hiding Place by Ann Elaine Broughton

“You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance” (Psalm 32:7 NIV).

Whenever we feel afraid we can turn to God to protect us. He is certainly a safe hiding place. Actually, He is the only hiding place that we can depend on when the storms of life threaten to swallow us up.
David wrote this verse and he certainly knew all about finding a hiding place. He had to run away from Saul, who was trying to kill him. He hid in a cave. I am sure he was wondering about his calling from the Lord. But you see even in the cave, God was there with him. David constantly communicated with God and relied on His answers to guide him. The Lord had not abandoned him.
Sometimes we need to go to the hiding place with God in order to get our priorities right. Sometimes we have a tendency to try to take the reins of our lives into our own hands and do what we please instead of asking God. It is in those times when we might end up running for our lives due to poor decisions that has led to harsh consequences. God is there waiting for us to find His hiding place, to rest in His loving arms, and receive His mercy.
When I was a little girl I was tremendously afraid of fierce storms.

When I was young I had witnessed the tornado that went through the area and I believe that the terror surrounding this had made a very big impression on me. So whenever there was a storm brewing with very dark clouds, I would panic and run to my hiding place. I felt safe and secure there. That hiding place was in my mother’s arms on her bed. I felt safe there. Just like my mom’s arms around me, giving me peace, so my Father’s arms give me peace when life’s storms threaten to overwhelm me.
Trust God this week with all of your overwhelming needs. Run to His hiding place and know that He will protect you and will deliver you from your feelings of despondency. He is waiting with arms open wide.
Dear Lord,
You are my hiding place. I know that you are always there when I call upon you for help. You will deliver me from evil and keep my safe.

You Are On God's Guest List by Ann Elaine Broughton



“Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one’s friend springs from his earnest counsel” (Proverbs 27:9 NIV).

How many friends do you have? How many friends have you had in your lifetime? Friends are so important in our Christian walk. They give us comfort, advice, and love. I am currently reading a book called God’s Guest List by Debbie Macomber. She wrote this book to show everyone how God uses people in our lives to help us, teach us, love us, encourage us, and help us grow. It is such an inspiring book. As I read it, I went over in my mind the people who have made an impact on my life. God has put people in my path who helped me grow as a person spiritually, who loved me when I felt in despair, who provided me with encouragement to write, and who have helped me get healthy.
After reading this book I have taken time to remember some people who have made an impact on my life. I know that God has put these people in my life to teach me things. Because of their relationships I have used the gifts God has given me in greater ways. A friend recommended that I start a devotional blog and now I have written 117 devotions. My friend also recommended that I publish my devotions on NBXpress.com. Now the word of God is being spread even more due to the persistence of a friend who saw my ability and knew I should do more.
God has put so many people in your life. There are people who have changed your life forever. They have encouraged you and loved you right when you needed it. Take time to think about all the people God has led to you and how they impacted your life. Then ask God to send people to you so you can be their Christian influence. Everyone you meet is a potential gift from God. It is up to you to take the time to give of yourself to see what blessing is in store for you and the other person. Pray for everyone you meet. Everyone can use prayer.
Dear Lord,
I thank you so much for the friends that have blessed my life. Thank you for those who have changed my life for the better, who have helped me grow spiritually, and who have helped me when I was down. Help me to reach out to others in the way that you did as you walked this earth.

Reach Out To Others by Ann Elaine Broughton



“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10 NIV).

Think about this past week and how you served the Lord. Did you help others in a self sacrificing way? Do you think about others’ needs first?
Are your interests surrounded around your needs so much that you have wrapped yourself up in a cocoon of self-pity?
Yes, we all have needs, but I have found that when I am praying for someone else’s problems or if I am actively helping someone, I have little time to be wrapped up in my own problems. I believe that Jesus wants us to reach out to others so that we won’t succumb to self pity.
Let’s face it, all of us have problems. In this world, we will, but it is how we view these problems that make a difference on our quality of life. We have power over our thoughts. We can decide what we think about. We can choose to wallow in self-pity, or look around us for someone who needs help and go to them. We are to serve others. We are to reach out to those who are hurting and give them hope. We are to feed the hungry, wipe the tears of those who mourn, pray with those who are hurting or are tempted, and go out of our way to show Christ’s love to those around us, even our enemies. This is how people will know that we are Christians, by the love and care we show as we serve the Lord in a self-sacrificing way. Don’t become so busy with your life, that you don’t have time to help those who are in need. We, as Christians, are to reach out to others. It is a command of Christ. “Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave” (Matthew 20:26 NIV).
Guess what? The world does not revolve around you. There are others surrounding you who need Christ’s loving arms and His caring voice. There are people who are needier than you and who hurt worse than you. There are always others who are worse off than you and you must realize this and reach out to them. It is time to get out of your comfort zone and help others. This week find someone who has a need and comfort them in some way. Reach out and you will not regret it. I am always happiest when I am helping someone.
Dear Lord,
Help me this week to not think about my own problems, but help me to reach out to someone who has a great need. Help me to serve others in a humble manner.

Serving the Lord by Ann Elaine Broughton





“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galations 6:9 NIV).

This is Labor Day, a day set aside to honor those who work. As Christians, we are to labor for the Lord every day. Jesus spent every waking moment doing His Father’s work, and He also wants us to do the work that He calls us to do. “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me” (John 9:4 NIV). Think about Jesus’ ministry.
From morning until night, He healed the sick, raised the dead, cast out demons, and preached the good news to the poor. His ministry was selfless. He served in complete humility and loved everyone. The way Jesus worked is the way we are to work. We are to be His hands and use them to serve others. We are to be His lips, and tell others about God’s wonderful love for them. Please don’t stop at just reading the Bible and praying. It is so important to put your faith into service.
“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:17 NIV). This statement from James is so true. It is not enough just to believe in God. “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that – and shudder” (James 2:19 NIV). You see even the demons believe in God, so you have to do more than just believe. You must display in your life the character of a Christian: you must serve Him and live a life that is pleasing in the Lord’s eyes.
This Labor Day consider how you are working for the Lord. Examine yourself and see if your life portrays the virtues of a Christian. Do the words you speak demonstrate to others that you love the Lord? Are you helping others in complete humility? Are you not complaining about your service for him?
Dear Lord,
Help me to work for you every day in complete humility. Help me to speak words that you would be proud of. Help me to witness to others who are in need of the Father’s love.

Peace Be With You by Ann Elaine Broughton



“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7 NIV).

Are you at peace? Do you take time every day just to be calm and be at peace, not thinking about anything? I believe this is so important because otherwise a person can just be busy from morning until night and eventually become so exhausted. We have a tendency to think, worry, and obsess and not consider that the peace of Christ is available to us if we just take time to be still.
My favorite Bible story is when Jesus was in the boat sleeping in the midst of a huge storm. “A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. Then the disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:37-41 NIV). Every time I am in a situation where I truly need peace I imagine Jesus standing up in front of me and shouting, “Quiet! Be still!” And I imagine all the stress leaving me just like when the waves got all calm. I let His peace rush over me.
When my mother was dying of cancer, I felt like I was battling a fierce storm within myself. My mother was my best friend and watching her slowly leave me was so very difficult. When I went to visit her I would pray that God would give me strength so that I would not cry and sob in front of her. Every time I went to see her I found peace within me and didn’t cry. Believe me, that wasn’t due to my own strength. It was God’s peace working inside of me.
This peace is available to you too. Just be still, pray, and have faith that He is with you and will give you His peace. Trust me, it will happen.
Dear Lord,
Help me to be still every day to feel your peace in the midst of life’s storms and stresses. Help me to remember that you are the only one who can give me the peace that passes all understanding.

Be At Peace With Everyone by Ann Elaine Broughton


“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18 NIV).

So how are you doing with this? Living at peace with everyone is a tall order, but if we all did it what a wonderful world this would be. Paul also says; “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love” (Romans 12:10 NIV). A good friend of mine gave me some wonderful advice. I was told to view people with love, compassion, and forgiveness. After all, this is Jesus’ teachings in a nutshell. Since then I have really tried hard to do this. I have a tendency to judge people rather harshly. So now when someone gets on my nerves, I remember that I am supposed to view them with compassion and love. It has helped me to remember how Jesus treated other people also. He was constantly surrounded by people pushing, shoving, and wanting his attention. He never got angry with them, but showed his compassion with them on every occasion even after a long day.
For example: Matthew 14:13-14 tells how Jesus had compassion even when he was mourning his cousin, John the Baptist’s death. He had withdrawn in a boat to a private place, but the crowd had followed Him on land. When he needed some time to be alone and mourn, he was surrounded by 5,000 men, besides the women and children when his boat landed. Instead of yelling at them to leave him alone, scripture says he had compassion on them and healed the sick. What a wonderful role model for all of us. He put others’ needs above His own. That is what we are to do.
So this week when someone is perturbing you or getting on your nerves, view them with compassion and love just like Jesus’ did.
You will feel better mentally and you just might bless someone else by your positive attitude.
Dear Lord,
Help me to follow your example and treat everyone with love, compassion, and forgiveness. Help me to try to be at peace with everyone so that my lifestyle will be the Christian witness it should be.

Step Out In Faith by Ann Elaine Broughton



“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62 NiV).

Are you questioning your purpose in life right now? Do you wonder if you are doing what God wants you to do? Has the Lord put something in your heart and you are afraid to step out in faith and try to do it? God has a special purpose for you and wants you to pray and follow His lead for your life. Sometimes that is difficult because it might take you out of your comfort zone, but if you truly feel led by God to do something, then He will surely open up opportunities to bless you. If it isn’t the Lord’s will then there will be blocks put in place so that you won’t get hurt. Heed them, because God is telling you to stop.
When we moved to McComb I had several interviews for teaching positions. One was a resource room in a small town near McComb. I called and called them until I’m sure the principal was totally annoyed at me. I tried to literally beg the guy to hire me. It didn’t work. Then there was another job opening and I was worried because it was too far to drive. Then a position opened up in the town I was raised in. Everything went fine in the interview and I have been there for 17 years. It has been such a blessing working there where I can pray with my Christian friends before school. I have learned so much about literacy because of working there and feel so privileged to work at a school that puts kids first. You see God knew what was best for me. I just had to wait for the right position to open up and everything fell into place. That is what happens when you trust God and walk in His will.
God has a special place for you too. He needs you to work for Him in special ways that only you can do. Trust Him to show you what that is, pray about it, and watch for the open doors. Once you feel positive that you have found what He wants you to do, then step out in faith and never look back. The above verse was spoken by Jesus. Don’t look back. Keep your hand in His and trust Him totally to help you. God will bless you as He has done me in my job.
Dear Lord,
Help me to believe that you have a special purpose for me. Help me to trust you to open up the door that you would have me walk through to serve you in a special way. Once I step out in faith give me the wisdom and courage to stay on this path and not turn back.

Breaking Down Strongholds by Ann Elaine Broughton


“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4 NIV).

Do you have strongholds in your life that need conquered? Are there habits, addictions, sin that have made you a victim? I have an addiction to sugar that is really bad, especially since yeast has a foothold in my whole body and it affects my health. I need to completely not eat any sugar, wheat or goodies. That is so hard when the yeast inside me is craving it like crazy. I found an excerpt in the Bible that is helping me. It is about David and how he had to overcome a lot of odds to conquer Jerusalem. It was quite a large task, since the people there told him that there was no way he could do it. But that didn’t stop him. He took his soldiers and conquered a very large stronghold. “The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion, the City of David” (2 Samuel 5:6-7 NIV).
I love this passage because of the word “nevertheless”. The Jebusites had ridiculed him but nevertheless David took the city because he knew his power came from the Lord.
You see the power that we have in the Holy Spirit is our weapon to demolish our strongholds. What we cannot accomplish in taking control of our weaknesses, the Holy Spirit can give us the strength and courage to say no. It is so easy to get caught into a trap of lacking self control and feeling awful afterwards. But instead, we must remember that we have divine strength inside of us and we “can do all things through Christ” (Phillipians 4:13).
So if you are battling a stronghold remember the word “nevertheless” and how David conquered his enemies with the Lord’s strength. I know this word is going to help me as I struggle with something that could ruin my health. May God bless you as you continue to strive to please the Lord in every aspect of your life.
Dear Lord,
I know that I have the Holy Spirit within me. Help me as I continue struggling to conquer a stronghold that is unhealthy. Help me to be strong in your strength and believe that I can take down this stronghold in your strength.

Dealing With Obsessions By Ann Elaine Broughton

“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5 NIV).

What do you find yourself thinking about the most? Remember the Lord knows your thoughts. “You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar” (Psalm 139:2 NIV). I believe we forget that our thoughts are being measured by the Lord every moment. If you are obsessing over something that is not good for you the Lord knows it. You might think that it is hidden and that it is fine to do something in private because nobody knows it. But God does know it. It can also be obsessing about a person that either you love or you hate.
I was in a Bible study by Beth Moore about Esther and there was a chapter on Haman and how he hated the Jews so badly that he made it an obsession. He hated a Jewish man called Mordecai the most. He was Esther’s uncle. He went out of his way to try to kill him. He even made a gallows to hang him on, but as it turned out Haman ended up hanging from that gallows. You see if you have an obsession about someone you end up hurting yourself in the end. That obsession takes over your life so much that happiness can never be found.
In the study Esther, It’s Tough Being A Woman, Beth says “that a person becomes a snare to us any time he or she consumes an excessive and unhealthy space in our thoughts, whether negative or positive. The individual may be someone:
• We are attracted to or feel threatened or defeated by.
• Whose approval eludes us or whose happiness consumes us.
• Whom we adore, despise, or, far more complexly, both.
The people who have become our biggest snares to us are the ones about whom we’re most prone to say, “I never act this way with anyone else” (p. 121-122).
I don’t know if you are struggling with this, but I do know that we have a wonderful Savior who does know and will help you overcome an obsession. Just lay it at His feet and ask Him to help you guard your thoughts. Pray for help to heal the brokenness inside you that is leading to your obsession. He will give you peace in this area if you willingly offer it up to Him.
Dear Lord,
Help me to guard my thoughts so that they are pleasing to you. If I am obsessing over anything or anyone more that I should, please help me to stop it. I lay my burdens down at your feet and believe that you will change my heart so that I seek only what will make you happy.

Put Your Faith Into Practice by Ann Elaine Broughton



“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24 NIV).

Are you putting into practice what you believe in regards to God’s word? Have you even taken time to read His word often so you know what God wants you to do? Jesus spoke the above words in a form of a parable so the people could understand what he meant about living a life that was pleasing to God. It is easy to sit in church, listen to a sermon, sing praise songs, attend Bible studies, but it you don’t put into practice all that you read and hear then it is meaningless in God’s eyes. You must put into practice everything you learn so that others will see what a difference Christ can make in a life.
The parable above relates to the man who built his house on the rock and when the rain came and the winds blew and beat against the house it didn’t fall. This means as your faith grows and you actually put into practice what you hear in sermons and read in the Bible, you will be able to withstand all of the troubles that come your way in life. But if you just go to church believing that is all you have to do for the Lord, then when the storms of life come, your faith will waver because you haven’t made the true commitment to the Lord that He requires. He goes on to say this: “But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash” (Matthew 7:26-27 NIV).
There have been several times in my life when the storms have battered me, but since I believe in my Savior and have faith in Him beyond what I can even describe to you, I was able to withstand the storm. I prayed and cried out to Him and He gave me peace right in the middle of that tremendous storm. It is a peace that only He can give.
Don’t be like the foolish man. Be sure that you are living a life that is pleasing to God every day. Be in constant communication with Him so that when the storms do come you will know that peace that only He can give too.
Dear Lord,
Help me to live my life every day in a manner that is pleasing to you.
I want to be like the man who built his home on the rock so that when the storms of life come, I will be safe and secure in your love.

Take Time to Pray by Ann Elaine Broughton


“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." Mark 6:31
"After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. Mark 6:46

Jesus knew that He needed to have time with God in order to do His will. He was constantly being inundated by people who wanted to be healed. He was surrounded by crowds most of the time so getting alone with God was a precious time to Him. He needed time alone and often went to the mountain for peace and prayer. We too should take his example to heart. I have a tendency to pray on the run, which I believe isn't all that bad, but I also believe that the Lord requires us to seek time alone with Him where there are no distractions. We need to set aside a time each day that all we do is pray and be still before the Lord. The closest I feel to God is when I just sit still in a quiet place and pray to Him from my heart without worrying about anything else. I would urge you to find a quiet place and pick a time in the day when there are no distractions and pray to the Lord. Then quiet your soul and find His peace flow through you. The peace that passeth understanding that only Christ can give. Jesus found it on that mountain and tells us all that we too can find it. "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you, I do not give to you as the world gives." John 14:27
Dear Lord,
Help us to seek you without distractions. Help us to be alone with you so that we can feel your peace, a peace that only you can give. It is this way that we can really serve you effectively because those around us will see your peace and know that it comes for you. This world can be so filled with worries, duties, and responsibilities. We know that if we aren't grounded in your love we can never do what is expected of us in the right kind of spirit. Thank you for the promise that you will be with us if we pray. Thank you for your peace.

God's Power Is Within You by Ann Elaine Broughton

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline” (2 Timothy 2:7 NIV).

There are many examples of God's power working through people in the Bible. The Lord showed His power when he picked a shepherd boy to fight a giant with his little sling shot. Do you know what David said as he faced the giant? "This day the Lord will hand you over to me.......All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands “ (I Samuel 17:46,47 NIV). He had confidence in the Lord and knew that if he believed mighty things would happen. David became a king, because he was a man after God's own heart.

Jeremiah, the prophet, was a timid man. When he was called by God to be a prophet he told God, "I do not know how to speak; I am only a child. But the Lord said," Do not say, I am only a child. You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you" (Jeremiah 1:6-8 NIV). The Lord fulfilled his promise and did give him the strength and courage to be a prophet. So you see what God’s power can do through even a child.

How does this impact your life? You need to understand that God can use anyone to fulfill His purpose on this earth. You don't have to be a great orator because the Lord will give you the words, just like He did for Jeremiah. It is Christ in you who gives you the strength and wisdom to do His will. You are called to do something for the Lord. You have a special gift that can be used to help someone else to see Christ. The men above devoted their whole lives to serving God. When we become Christians we make a commitment to God to do our best to serve Him in whatever manner He wants us to serve. We must rely on His power to do this.

Dear Lord,
We know that you are within us and that you have promised to give us the strength, wisdom, and courage to fulfill whatever your plan is for us. Help us to be brave and step out with your strength knowing that you have promised never to fail us.

Be Kind to One Another by Ann Elaine Broughton


“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32 NIV).

In our busy schedule of life it is easy to get caught up in work or activities so much that we get worn out. It is at this time when it is easy to snap at our loved ones. I think we have a tendency to treat our own family worse then strangers, thinking they live with us so they will still love us. I think Satan is involved in all this so there will be conflict in our families. We need to stand firm in Christ and treat everyone the way we would want to be treated; with kindness and a compassion. We need to take time every day just to be quiet and pray for wisdom to handle difficulties with our families, co-workers, or friends.
Forgiving each other can be very difficult, especially when you have been hurt unfairly. But the Bible is very clear on forgiveness: “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, you Father will not forgive your sins” (Matthew 6:14-15 NIV).
So when other people hurt us in any way, we must forgive them as this is a command from Jesus. It is a struggle sometimes to do this, but if we surrender the person who has caused us pain to the Lord and let Him deal with it, we will find peace. After all, if Jesus could forgive the men who beat Him, spat upon Him, scourged Him, and crucified Him, we can do the same to those who cause us pain. When we behave in this manner: treating others with compassion and with kindness and forgiveness, it is a tremendous witness to those who don’t know Christ as their Savior. Ask God to help you with this and you will see a difference in your attitude towards everyone.
Dear Lord,
Help us to have compassion for others at all times. Help us to view others as you would. Help us to forgive those who sin against just the way you did. We know we can do this through your help.

Work At It With All Your Heart by Ann Elaine Broughton




“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24

As we start the work week, I think it is important to remember who you are really serving. Sometimes it is easy to forget that what you do isn’t just another job, but that you have been guided by God to be where you are for a specific reason. God has a purpose for you where you are, and it is up to you, through prayer, to use the talents God has given you to work for Him. He knows that you have the abilities to fulfill this purpose or you wouldn’t be in this position. Where you are weak, He will give you the strength to carry on if you ask Him for it. See each challenge as a way to serve Him and gain wisdom from Him to handle the problem. Someone is in need of you and your specific ability where you work. They need to hear your encouraging words. Be in tune with God so He will guide you to assist those who need your love, guidance, and encouragement.
I recently finished reading a great book called “One In A Million” by Priscilla Shirer. It is such a good book about how as a Christian it is so important for you to step out in faith and do what God has shown you to do. Sometimes it takes courage to do this at work. This may mean that you may have to step out of your comfort zone. But always remember the Lord is with you. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9 NIV). Remember the Lord is always with you.
During this week, remember to seek out God to help you through the rough times at your job, and step out in faith if He wants you to accept a challenge.

Dear God,
Please help me as I start another week doing your service that you handpicked me to do. Keep me on track, knowing that you are the one I must ultimately answer to. Help me to do my best for you. Help me to imagine that you have a hand on my shoulder and are guiding all of my decisions.

Communion and Jesus' Sacrifice by Ann Elaine Broughton


“This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19 NIV).
Today is Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember those who gave their lives serving our country. In the church our memorial is communion. It is a time to reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for our sins. He gave His life willingly as the ultimate sacrifice. This is something we should remember with a solemn heart.
Our church has communion every Sunday. Some say that it is too often, but I don’t think so. For me it is a very important part of the worship and a very good reason to go to church every Sunday. When I take communion I reflect on what I saw in “The Passion” movie. I see Jesus being beaten with a whip until his back was in shreds. I see the people spitting on him. I hear the nails being pounded into his flesh on the cross. I hear the jeering of the crowd telling him to come off of the cross. Then I am humbled beyond what I can describe to you. He did all that for you and me. He suffered beyond what I could ever endure so that my sins could be forgiven. Then as I meditate on these things, I feel a love fill my soul for such a Savior who would choose to suffer for me. It is a time for me to forget about the cares of this world, and sit and reflect on my Savior’s love for everyone. It is so very meaningful.
But if you take communion in a flippant manner, then you will be guilty of sin. “Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup” (1 Cor. 11:27-28 NIV). You see it is a time of self-reflection. For me it is a time to reflect on the past week and think about if I have behaved in a manner not worthy of Jesus’ sacrifice for me. I repent if something comes to my mind that I need to confess. Then I pray that God will help me during the coming week to not do that particular sin again. We are all human and we make mistakes. Communion for me is a time to confess those sins and then to try to be more like Christ during the coming week.
So as you celebrate Memorial Day, also reflect on Jesus’ great sacrifice for you.
Dear Lord,
Help us when we take communion to take it in a serious manner knowing that the sacrifice of Jesus’ life for our sins was the ultimate sacrifice. Help us to reflect on our lives and how we can strive to live a life that is pleasing to God.

Our Wonderful Counselor by Ann Elaine Broughton



“Come unto me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 NIV).

Jesus is our counselor. He is always available without making an appointment. You won’t be put on hold when you call on His name.
You won’t have to sit in a waiting room thumbing through magazines for an hour because everyone knows that no doctor or psychologist is on time. You will be counseled by the most perfect person in the world, who was tempted in every way but did not give in to that temptation. What human can say that? He has been ridiculed and mocked so he can relate to you if you are being persecuted by someone. He has known grief when his very good friend, Lazarus died so He understands when you suffer agony over the loss of a friend or loved one. He was betrayed by one that He had chosen to be part of the twelve, a group who He taught specifically to be the ones who formed the foundation of the church. Because of this betrayal He was brutally crucified and yet He forgave all those who participated in it.
So He understands if you have been betrayed by a friend or your spouse. He will help you to forgive and move on with your life.
He knows what it is to be without food for awhile, since He went without food for forty days and nights. He knows your needs and will help you. “So do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? or What Shall we drink? or What shall we wear? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:31-33 NIV). Jesus was in agony in the garden when he was praying before he was crucified. He understands how you are feeling if you are facing something that is anguishing: such as cancer or any debilitating illness. He will give you peace. There have been times when I have been in great need and cried out to the Lord to help me. Then I felt a peace flood over my soul that can’t even be put into words. This peace is also available to everyone who calls upon the Lord for help. He is our Great Counselor. He loves you with a love that no human can give. Just trust Him and pour out your hear to Him. He is always available.
Dear Lord,
Sometimes it is too easy just to wallow in self-pity, instead of carrying our burdens and needs to you. We know that you are our Wonderful Counselor who hears our prayers and answers them. Give us peace in the midst of turmoil. Thank you for your peace.

The Good Shepherd by Ann Elaine Broughton



“I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me……..My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand” ( John 10:14, 27-28 NIV).

How can Jesus being the good shepherd relate to you now? At the time when Jesus was living there were many shepherds in the area where he lived. He used the above words because the people who were listening to him could relate to him better when he made a connection of the shepherd and His own purpose on earth. We are in many ways like sheep. Sheep will follow one another everywhere. If one jumps the others will jump even if there is nothing to jump over. They run away and get lost and it is the shepherd’s job to go and find them and bring them back to the flock.

We have a tendency to follow the crowd and do things that aren’t Christ-like. We go astray like the sheep and wander around in a world that is dangerous and full of temptations. Jesus calls us by name but too many times we are caught up in worldly desires so much that we don’t want to listen. "He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them and his sheep follow him because they know his voice" (John 10:3-4 NIV). Jesus our shepherd is calling us by name while we wander in the wilderness of sin and hopelessness. It is up to us to listen to His voice and run to his arms to receive his forgiveness and grace. Jesus is our shepherd who loves us. "He tends his flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young" (Isaiah 40:11 NIV). I like to imagine Jesus holding me close to His heart when I am having struggles with temptations or when life's burdens threaten to overwhelm me. I picture myself in His arms safe and sound, and secure in His love. In order to hear His voice we need to be still long enough to meditate in prayer. Be sure to take time every day to just sit and listen. He is calling your name.

Dear Lord,
The world is full of things that tempt us and there are times when we stray. Help us to hear your voice and come running to you knowing that you are full of grace and mercy.

Our Redeemer by Ann Elaine Broughton



“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28 NIV).

Jesus is our Redeemer. What does being redeemed mean? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary among the definitions of redeemed is to free from what distresses or harms: as to free from captivity by payment of ransom or to free from the consequences of sin. Jesus came to earth to be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. He gave His life so that we could some day have eternal life with Him. Before He came the Jews had to make sacrifices all the time for their sins. It was a continuous process. Jesus came to be the sacrifice to end all of the other sacrifices. We owed a debt because of our sins and Jesus paid it for us. He went to the cross willingly knowing what was ahead of him; the agony, the beatings, and the humiliation. He did that because He loved you and I so much that He wanted us to have a part in the Heavenly kingdom. Being redeemed is so wonderful because it is a gift that God has given us with no strings attached. We are to accept it and then live for Him.
When I was a kid my mom saved S&H green stamps. She would get them from purchases and save them up to get items from the S&H catalogue. We would look at the catalog and pick out something that we could save the stamps for. Then after we filled up a bunch of books we would redeem them for our wonderful gift. It was exciting to finally get it because it usually took a bunch of stamps to get it. But in the end it was so worth it. Our wonderful gift that we get from Christ’s redemption is eternal life which is the one gift that is better than all the riches in the world.

Thank you so much for redeeming us from our sins. We know that we aren’t worthy, but that it was a gift to us. Help us to remember that sacrifice and live a life that pleases you every day.

The Messiah by Ann Elaine Broughton


“The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am he” (John 4:25-26 NIV).

Several years ago I sang in “The Messiah”, a musical oratorio written by Handel. “The Messiah” is a musical masterpiece that proclaims Jesus from birth until the resurrection using biblical references. As I sang I felt goose bumps run all over my body as the words declaring the Messiah’s birth resonated through the room. The long awaited Son of God is born. Then the music moved on to His death. He was bruised for our iniquities, chastised, and wounded for our transgressions. By his stripes we are healed. Then the Hallelujah chorus declares that Jesus will reign forever. When the king heard this chorus he was so moved by it that he stood to his feet and that is why everyone rises when it is sung today. And what a wonderful chorus it is. Hallelujah, our Savior reigns forever and ever. I get goose bumps just thinking about it. What a wonderful Messiah!
What can this Messiah or the Anointed One do for you? Messiah is a Hebrew word which when translated into Greek means Christ. Both words mean the Anointed One or one who is especially appointed by God for His plan and purpose. God had a plan for Jesus from the time He was born, just as He has a plan for you and I. Jesus fulfilled that plan when He was nailed to the cross for our sins and rose from the dead. Now this Messiah lives forever and offers that to you and me. What have you done with this Messiah? Have you given your life for His purpose? Do you live to do His will every moment of your Life? Life is so short and it is so important to realize that your Messiah is a prayer away and that to do His will is the most important life focus you can ever have.
Dear Lord,
Thank you for the Messiah and all He did for us on this earth. We cannot repay all the pain and anguish He felt on the cross, but we can give our lives as living sacrifices to do His will. Help us to fulfill your purpose for us here on this earth.

The Mighty God by Ann Elaine Broughton

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV).

Have you called upon the Mighty God to help you lately? Do you realize that nothing is impossible for Him? I believe we have a tendency to put Jesus in a box and as mere humans it is impossible for us to comprehend just what a Mighty God can do for us. But maybe it is time to open that box and explore and believe beyond our wildest dreams what we can do with the Mighty God that resides in all of us if we are Christians. We have within us power that is amazing. Have you tapped it lately or are you too busy to even ponder what Jesus can do through you? “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,” (Ephesians 3:20 NIV). I would suggest that you memorize this verse. It is so very important for you to realize that the power within you is the Mighty God capable of doing mighty things through you if you take time to pray and believe. The impossible is possible with God and you might be the very person He needs to show that to the world.
Let me give you an example of how the Holy Spirit changed a man in the Bible. Peter was an apostle who was impulsive. When they arrested Jesus it was Peter who cut the high priest’s servants ear off. Before Jesus was arrested He predicted that Peter would disown Him. Peter vowed that he would never disown him. After they arrested Jesus, Peter followed behind and when asked three times if he followed after Jesus, he denied it. He was behaving like a coward. But after the Holy Spirit came to the apostles something exciting happened. They were filled with great power. Peter stood up and preached a sermon that concluded with 3,000 people being baptized. His sermon was powerful and he certainly wasn’t the timid and scared person he portrayed at Jesus’ arrest.
The same Mighty God is in you in the form of the Holy Spirit if you are a Christian. It is up to you to decide either to push this power back and deny it or pray and watch what God can do through you. Take time this week to pray and mediate on how you can be used by the Mighty God that exists in your very being. Imagine what He can do through you if you believe.
Dear Lord,
Help me to be used by you in mighty ways that only you can perform. I am just a weak human being, but I know that through your power I can complete what your task is for me on this earth. Help me not to be afraid, but to step out in faith to accomplish your purpose.

The Names of Jesus by Ann Elaine Broughton

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17 NIV).

There are 50 names for Jesus in the Bible and it is so very important for you to learn what those names are and what they mean to you.
Once I went to a women’s conference and heard a speaker who said all the names of Jesus from memory. She did not hesitate once and by the end we were all on our feet praising God and crying. It was so very powerful to hear all those wonderful names of Jesus out loud and I do mean loud. She was practically yelling at the end. It was awe-inspiring.
I will give you 10 of them to ponder. Over the next ten weeks I will be writing a devotion on each name and how it impacts your Christian life.
• Almighty
• Messiah
• Redeemer
• Resurrection and the Life
• Savior
• Shepherd
• Son of God
• The Way, the Truth, The Life
• Wonderful Counselor
• Bread of Life
• Prince of Peace
Jesus is all these names and more. Meditate on these names and what impact these names have on your life. He is available to you in all these forms and longs to bring you to a deeper more meaningful relationship with him. But you must take time to do this and really pursue quiet time with Him. You need this so very much in order to find peace in your hectic and busy life.
Dear Lord,
Help me to meditate and pray in quiet every day in order to find the peace only you can give. Help me to ponder what all these names mean to me personally and reveal to me what I need to do to show others who you really are.

God Has A Secret Name For You by Ann Elaine Broughton

“To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it” (Revelation 2:17 NIV).

Jesus has a secret name for you. Do you know what it is? I just got done reading a wonderful book called, “Your Secret Name: Discovering Who God Created You To Be” by Kary Oberbrunner. I highly recommend this book. The author of the book was crippled by an emotional illness that was very severe. He had believed the bad names others had given him and he had given himself. But through several God inspired events he was able to finally tell a counselor what he was doing and get help. His new name now is FREE, meaning free of all the lies of Satan.

The premise for the book is that God has a secret name for you and it is important that you learn what it is. Too many times the names that are attached to us are not what God wants. Some examples are: fat, ugly, dumb, learning disabled, anorexic, bulimic, depressed, anxious, liar, deceiver, adulterer, or addict to name a few. These names are given by the ultimate deceiver, Satan, and are given in order to cripple those who have them and throw them into utter darkness. But Jesus has given each one of us a secret name; a name that can transform us into what God wants us to be.

After reading this book I prayed and meditated about what God’s secret name for me was. As I was praying a word came into my mind: JOYGIVER. Anyone who truly knows me will agree with that. I love to make people laugh, and my own laugh is unforgettable. People have commented how my smile makes them happy. So when I start believing the names Satan puts in my mind that aren’t good, I will remember that Jesus’ name for me is JOYGIVER, and I will smile and tell Satan to get behind me.

You too can learn what your secret name is. Don’t believe the negative names that might come to your mind. Pray and meditate and ask the Lord to reveal to you what your secret name is. It will come to you. Then remember that name when you are tempted. When you get to Heaven, He will greet you by your secret name. Isn’t that wonderful!!!

Dear Lord,
Satan wants us to believe the lies that we are worthless. Help us as we search for your secret name for us, and help us to live up to it when we find it. Give us strength not to give in to temptation and believe the old names that we once had.

God’s Strength Will Help You by Ann Elaine Broughton

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” There I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, than I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12: 9-10 NIV).

It impresses me a lot that Paul could say that he was well content in his weaknesses, insults, distresses, persecution, and difficulties. How many of us can say that when we are tested? Maybe we should try to do what Paul did and see all of these things as an opportunity to grow our character in the Lord and produce perseverance. I believe that when we try to do something that requires our faith in God, then we will truly see how God can work through our weakness.
When I started out in my career I wanted to be a music teacher. Then an opening for a Learning Disability tutor came available at the school in Wooster across from our home. I went to the interview and told the man that my degree was in music and I didn’t know if I could do a good job. He smiled and told me I would do fine. I had my doubts, but trusted that God knew more than I did. I was scared to death when I first started, but I prayed and God gave me wisdom to teach my students what they needed. I took courses, and I am constantly trying to learn more to help my students. Now, 26 years later, the Lord still guides me and shows me that in my weakness, He can accomplish amazing things. I have been able to help many students all because I took a leap of faith and walked through a door God opened for me.
We all have times when we are weak and endure all of the tough times above that Paul experienced. If we let God take over control, He will guide us and give us His strength to carry on. So the next time you feel as if you can’t make it, rely on God to get you through it and ask Him to help you see how it will help you to grow as a Christian. I wouldn’t be teaching today if it weren’t for the Lord carrying me through some really tough times. I know He can do the same for you.

Dear God,
Help us as we struggle with our weaknesses and troubles. Let us know that you are our source of strength when our strength is gone. Thank you for being there for us when we call on you and showing us how to rely on you for help.

Rejoice in Suffering by Ann Elaine Broughton

"Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance…..” (Romans 5:3 NIV).

This winter I have had several health issues that are a result of my fibromyalgia. They aren't too serious, but causing enough pain to be irritating. I was feeling sorry for myself, because I don't handle pain that well. It is interesting how God has put several people in my path lately that have had much worse problems. One gal's older daughter fell into a bonfire and suffered third degree burns, got stung on her back by hornets, and is going to have some minor surgery. Well, I just stood there as she was telling me this and felt tremendously lucky that at least I didn't have to suffer like that. It also got my mind off myself and onto praying for her daughter who is suffering so much more than I am.

Persevering through the troubled times in our lives can be daunting, especially when they come in multiples. But centering ourselves on our own troubles only makes things worse. Reaching out to others helps us to stop dwelling on self-pity.

Paul says here that we are to praise the Lord when we have tribulations or sufferings. It is difficult to praise God through the tough times, but it is during those times that we really need to remember that the Lord loves us and is still with us. Persevere through your times of troubles, reach out to others, and praise God knowing He is there for you and will help you through whatever trial comes your way. When you have gone through your trial, then you can help others who are having difficulties. You can have true compassion for them because of what you have experienced. Since I know what it is like to be in pain, I have compassion for those who are suffering from fybromyalgia. Everyone needs compassion.

Dear Lord,

We know that troubled times will come to all of us. Help us to praise you for who you are, a mighty and awesome God, ready to give comfort to all who ask for it. Help us to persevere through our times of trouble knowing that after we have persevered we can help someone else.

Go Deeper in Your Faith by Ann Elaine Broughton

"When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water, and let down your nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so I will let down the nets." (Luke 5:4-5 NIV).

Jesus had used Simon Peter's boat to speak to a very large crowd and it was after this that he told Peter to go out to the deep to catch some fish. Peter didn't have to do this. He could have made excuses and whined, saying that they had been out all night and there were no fish out there. But it was his submission that teaches us all a lesson. The results were amazing, enough fish to fill two boats. This convinced the fisherman that Jesus was a special man so much so that they gave up everything to follow Him.
Casting Crowns, a Christian musical group, has a song that speaks about being in the middle between the deep and the shore. The shore is where we were before we knew Jesus and the deep is where we give Him everything and not live for what this world can give us. Sometimes we are in the middle, not wanting to commit ourselves completely to Jesus, but yet not wanting to go back to the very dark life we had before Christ. Peter is an inspiration because he said, "I will do as you say." It is time for us to let down our nets into the deep and to trust God to use us in remarkable and amazing ways. It is easy to sit in the middle, but that is not where we will benefit from seeing how God can work in our lives. It is when we surrender everything into His hands that we truly see His power at work. Jesus said that nothing is impossible with God. We limit ourselves sometimes because we don't have enough faith to believe that God can still do awesome things through us. God needs us to go to the deep, trust Him, and do something amazing for Him in His name.
Dear God,
It is very tempting sometimes to stay in the middle, not committing ourselves to be fully used by you. After all, when we are in the middle, there are no expectations. Help us to go out into the deep because you want us to learn that trusting you can bring us amazing results. Thank you for giving us the courage to step out in faith knowing you will never leave us or forsake us.

Give of Yourself by Ann Elaine Broughton

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship” (Romans 12:1 NIV).

Have you given up something for Lent? Many people decide to give up something as a sacrifice. I am going to offer you a challenge that goes beyond giving up chocolate, candy, or other goodies. I want you to give up some of your time as a sacrifice instead of food. Take time out of each day to do something for somebody else whether it is sending an encouraging email, card, or making a phone call to a shut-in. There are so many widows who need someone to visit with them. There are lonely people who need you to call them and lift their spirit. Maybe you could give up your cappuccino or bottle of pop every day and give the money to your church’s benevolent fund to provide food for the needy. Maybe instead of eating out one night during the week you could use that money for benevolence in some manner. These are just a few ideas of what you could do as an act of service for the Lord. I urge you this Lenten season to do something for others every day as your spiritual act of service. Actually, this shouldn’t just be for Lent, but it should be your mission every day of your life. I guarantee that you will feel so wonderful knowing that you are helping someone.
Dear Lord,
This Lenten season help me to offer myself as a sacrifice. There are so many people who need cheering up. Help me to take time every day to be your hands and voice of encouragement to others.

Doing The Will of the Lord by Ann Elaine Broughton

“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work” (John 4:34 NIV).

Can you say that is what you are doing for the Lord? Are you finishing the work that the Lord has laid out for you to do? Jesus came to the earth with a specific purpose: to die for our sins and to rise from the dead in order for us to receive eternal life. He came to fulfill many prophecies: to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. (Isaiah 61:1,2) He knew what pain and agony He would endure on the cross before it happened. When he prayed before He was arrested he was in anguish and prayed earnestly. The Bible says that his sweat was like drops of blood falling on the ground. (Luke 22:44) But even though He knew what horror was ahead of Him, He walked calmly to be the sacrifice for our sins. He did His father’s will.

You have been chosen to do something for the Lord also. It is so important that you fulfill what He wants you to do. You must earnestly pray, just like Jesus did, in order to do His will in your life. It might mean that you will have to step out in faith, or you might be required to give up something that hinders your witness. Maybe your desire for material things outweighs your love of Christ. Jesus was pretty blunt about not worshipping material wealth. Jesus told a rich man to sell everything and give it to the poor and follow him. The man couldn’t do it and Jesus told his disciples that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven. It can be very easy to love your things more than God. The Lord must be the top priority in your life in order for you to find true happiness. When you are doing His will you notice that others’ needs become more important than your own needs. The Lord came to serve and so your goal must be to find what way God will use your talents to serve others too.

Dear Lord,
I want to do your will. Please guide me as I try to find what you want me to do in order to further your kingdom on this earth. I know there are others who need me to show them your love. Guide me and give me wisdom as I try to live a sacrificial life for you.

Walking in the Wilderness by Ann Elaine Broughton

“Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands” (Deuteronomy 8:2 NIV).

I believe that there are times in our lives when we too can feel like we are wandering in the wilderness just like the Israelites. The Lord made them wander through the wilderness to humble them, and they also learned a lot about how God would help them if they called upon Him when they were in dire need. He provided them with water and food. Their clothes did not wear out. (Deut.8:4)
When we feel as if the world is tumbling down around us, we too must remember that God is with us. Our wildernesses may be illness, depression, lack of money to pay bills, work issues, or problems occurring with the family, too name a few. But even in all these problems, God is there to help us and encourage us. We can learn a lot about ourselves as we are going through our own wilderness walk.
If you feel like you are on that journey than take time to evaluate how closely you have been in touch with the Lord before you were forced to walk in the wilderness. According to this passage the Lord allows you to be in the wilderness to test you to know what is in your heart.
How are you handling your wilderness trip? Are you blaming God or asking Him to give you strength to handle whatever is around the corner? Are you trusting Him to take care of you? While the Israelites were wandering through the wilderness the Lord was with them every step of the way and when they were of the right heart He allowed them to enter the promised land.
On our journey through life there will be many walks in the wilderness, Keep your eyes on the Lord and He will lead you out of your wilderness and someday to your ultimate destination: Heaven.

Dear Lord,
Help us as we walk through our wildernesses. Give us strength to meet the tests and have our hearts tuned into your wisdom to get us through the times when we feel as if we can walk no further. We know that you will be with us and that you will never fail us if we call upon you.

Seeing Others Through God's Eyes by Ann Elaine Broughton

“He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9 NIV).

Recently I watch the movie again called Bruce Almighty. At the end Bruce is in heaven and God asks him to pray. He prays that his girl friend will meet someone who will see her as he does now through God’s eyes. That made an impact on me because most of the time I believe we don’t see others through God’s eyes, but because we have Christ in us that is exactly what we are suppose to do. Sometimes it is difficult when the person is annoying, mean, nasty, and mouthy. But, the Lord loves that person, and if you are looking at that person through the Lord’s eyes you should have compassion and not judge.
That is very difficult, but it is expected of us.
Jesus chose to be around people who weren’t exactly the cream of the crop. He even asked a hated tax collector to be an apostle. You see He loved everyone, even the woman caught in adultery. He sat with a Samaritan woman at the well and lovingly told her that he was the living water. He could have dismissed her and ignored her, since the Samaritans were hated by the Jews. Jesus chose to sit and talk to her about the fact that you should worship God in spirit and in truth. Seeing others through the Lord’s eyes means that you must love them and believe that the Lord’s love can transform them. God wants everyone to come to repentance and go to heaven. We are His eyes on this earth and must view them as He does.
This week think about someone who you have problems with and see them through the Lord’s eyes. Pray for them and also ask for guidance to be a witness to them in some way. Genuinely love them and watch what God can do through you.
Dear Lord,
Sometimes it is difficult to be around people who are abrasive. Help me to look at them through your eyes. I know that you want everyone to go to heaven, so help me to show compassion and love.

Keep on the Christian Path by Ann Elaine Broughton

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:23-24 NIV).

I was always told not to swerve when driving, especially when an animal comes out in front of the car. I’m glad I remembered that lesson when a deer ran into the side of my car. I just kept driving straight. If I would have swerved I would have gone into a deep ditch.
When my son was learning how to drive it was snowing and a bunny ran out in front of the car. He swerved and the car slid scaring me half to death. That is when I said, “Do not swerve the car no matter what for an animal.” You could have a serious accident just swerving for a critter.

To live a Christian life, we should be sincerely trying not to swerve from the hope we profess. To leave the Christian path even for an instant makes us vulnerable to Satan’s enticing us to sin. The more we go off the path God has chosen for us, the more our faith weakens. It is so important to keep in constant touch with God through prayer. We must also encourage our Christian friends to show Christ’s love to others by choosing to do good deeds for those who are in need. This week take time to encourage a Christian friend to do the Lord’s will in their life and to do something to help another person who really needs to see God’s love in action.

Dear Lord,
Sometimes life gets so busy that we have a tendency to swerve away from what you want us to do. Help us to remember to encourage our Christian friends to help others in a special way. We know that you want us to show your love to others.

Jesus Offers Peace by Ann Elaine Broughton

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 NIV).

When was the last time you needed to rest due to weariness? Jesus wants you to pray to Him and lay your burdens down at His feet. He will give you rest if you take time to just sit, be calm, and pray to Him about your issues. I imagine myself hugging Jesus and just basking in His love and peace. It is a wonderful image and one that will help you also. Jesus wants you to be at peace about everything, because if you aren’t then you are obsessing about issues that you have no control over. That is not peaceful. If you can’t do anything about it, you must give it to Him and trust Him to take care of it for you.
The biggest peace buster is hanging onto past sins that you have committed that you have asked forgiveness for. Don’t do it. You must leave all of that behind you and believe that it is forgiven. Looking back makes you vulnerable to stumble because you cannot see where you are heading.
Keep your eyes on the Lord and believe that He loves you no matter what you did in your life. He wants you to be happy and free of burdens. Resting with Jesus is the most peaceful experience ever.
I urge you to make it a priority to do this every day. Life is full of troubles, trials, hurts, and stress so when Jesus tells you to come to Him and He will give you rest, take advantage of it. It will help you stay healthy so that you can continue to serve Him in amazing ways.
So my challenge to you this week is to take time each day to rest in Jesus’ arms and lay your burdens at His feet. Leave them their and forget about them. He is in control. Life is too short to dwell on things that depress you and stress you. Make peace your priority.
Dear Lord,
I know that you are waiting for me to come to you. Help me to take time every day to rest in your love and peace and lay my problems at your feet. I know you will help me not to worry about things I have no control over. Thank you for your peace.

How Do You Handle Temptation by Ann Elaine Broughton

“And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it” (1 Cor. 10:13 NIV).


How do you handle temptation? Let’s face it life is full of temptation and how you handle it reflects on your faith in God. Jesus quoted scripture when he was tempted. After Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit led Him to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. To me it is comforting to know that Jesus was tempted, so that when I pray during a temptation He will understand exactly what I need for my situation. The Bible says that Jesus was tempted in every way that we are. “But we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15 NIV). He knows how hard it is to be tempted and has compassion for us. The most important thing you must do is say no when temptation rears its ugly head. I think it is also very good to have some Bible verses memorized for such a situation. Jesus used scripture to thwart Satan, so it is a valuable tool in your fight against giving in to temptation. I will give you a few verses that I use when tempted.
• “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble”
(Psalm 46:1 NIV).
• “Be strong and courageous, and do the work, for the Lord God, my God, is with you” (1 Chronicles 28:20 NIV).
• “I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13 NIV).
The Lord will give you strength when you need it when you pray for him to help you. Temptation is a way of life, but as the verse above states God will provide a way out. You must plan what you will do and be prepared. Pray, read the Bible, and trust the Lord. He will never fail you.
Dear Lord,
We know that temptation will befall us, but we also know that you are with us. Help us to be prepared by learning scripture to help us. Help us to say no to Satan. Thank you for always being with us.
